SSLMate Hostname Policy

Standard Certificates

A standard certificate is designed to secure a single hostname, such as example.com or subdomain.example.com.

If the hostname does not start with www., then an alternative name is added, free of charge, for the hostname prefixed with www..

If the hostname starts with www., then an alternative name is added to the certificate, free of charge, for the remaining part of the the hostname, ensuring that the certificate is valid for both hostnames.

For example, a standard certificate for example.com secures:

  • example.com
  • www.example.com

A standard certificate for www.example.com secures:

  • example.com

A standard certificate for subdomain.example.com (where subdomain is not www) secures:

  • subdomain.example.com
  • www.subdomain.example.com

Multi-Hostname Certificates

A multi-hostname certificate secures up to 100 hostnames of your choosing for a per-hostname fee. The hostnames do not need to be part of the same domain.

For example, a single multi-hostname certificate could secure the following hostnames, for a cost of $99.80 (4 × $24.95):

  • example.com
  • subdomain.example.com
  • example.org

Unlike standard certificates, alternative names are not automatically added to multi-hostname certificates. For example, if you request a multi-hostname certificate for example.com, an alternative name for www.example.com is not added unless you explicitly request it.

Wildcard Certificates

A wildcard certificate secures both the wildcard domain itself and all of the hostnames directly below the wildcard domain for a flat fee. The number of secured hostnames is limitless and the hostnames need not be specified in advance. Wildcard certificates do not secure hostnames two or more levels below the wildcard domain.

For example, a wildcard certificate for *.example.com secures the following hostnames for a flat fee of $149.95:

  • example.com
  • www.example.com
  • subdomain1.example.com
  • subdomain2.example.com

A wildcard certificate for *.example.com does not secure:

Wildcard certificates can also be purchased for sub-domains, such as *.subdomain.example.com, in which case subdomain.example.com and all hostnames directly beneath are secured.

SSLMate for SaaS Certificates SaaS

Certificates obtained through the SSLMate for SaaS service can secure up to 100 hostnames of your choosing for free (although each active certificate in your account counts against your plan's quota).

Alternative names are not automatically added to SaaS certificates. For example, if you create an order for example.com, an alternative name for www.example.com is not added unless you explicitly include it in your order.
